José-Carlos Torrecillas Wealth Solutions Specialist
Since December 2nd, a rather special newcomer has joined the ranks of Piguet Galland. Taïga, a young assistance Labrador born on September 25, 2024, now accompanies our colleague José-Carlos Torrecillas at the office and during his travels. But who is Taïga, and why is his presence so essential? Discover his story, his role, and the unique bond he develops with his handler.
An exceptional puppy for a precious mission
Taïga is no ordinary dog. He was selected in partnership with the Médical Flair association to become a medical assistance dog specialized in helping people with diabetes. His main role? Detect hypoglycemia episodes even before a sensor does, thanks to his exceptional sense of smell.
José-Carlos explains:
"Initially, the association did not collaborate with breeders in Switzerland. During my research, I discovered the Ravine breeding center in Fribourg, where Carmen, the owner, introduced me to Taïga. He was calm and well-suited for this vital role. Everything happened naturally."
A daily routine defined by training
For now, Taïga is in the canine education phase, a crucial step that builds the foundation for his future assistance role. His official training will begin in March 2025 and will last 18 months. This period is structured into four modules, including weekly sessions and daily exercises.
Once certified, Taïga will be able to:
- Quickly detect blood sugar variations,
- Bring the necessary equipment to José-Carlos,
- Encourage him to sit or move to safety when needed.
"The training is demanding, with regular exams for each module. The daily exercises are essential to ensure that Taïga will be ready to react effectively."
Taïga's importance in everyday life and at work
Even though he is still young, Taïga is already changing José-Carlos's life:
"For now, things are very lively! Like a child, a puppy requires a lot of attention. But eventually, he will be an indispensable support in managing my illness and avoiding critical situations."
In a professional setting, Taïga will also have a major impact:
"I don’t always feel the signs of hypoglycemia. I’ve had to cut client meetings short to take sugar. With Taïga, these interruptions can be avoided. He will help me stay focused and calm during my professional interactions."
A mascot adopted by everyone
While Taïga does not yet attend meetings, he has already won everyone’s hearts:
"My colleagues immediately adopted him! He has become the bank’s mascot. Of course, we sometimes have to watch the cables, as a puppy tends to explore everything!"
José-Carlos also raises awareness about the importance of not petting Taïga when he wears his vest:
"The vest indicates that he is in work mode. This allows him to stay 100% focused on his mission."
Touching moments and a unique bond
Even in his first weeks, Taïga has impressed with his strength of character:
"During his first night separated from his family, he didn’t cry even once. He shows incredible calmness and resilience."
José-Carlos is convinced their bond will strengthen over time:
"As the months go by, our connection will grow stronger. We will take care of each other every day."
A message for everyone: respect assistance dogs
Through this adventure, José-Carlos also aims to raise awareness among his colleagues and the general public:
- Respect the work of assistance dogs,
- Do not distract them when they are wearing their vest,
- Understand that they play a vital role for their handlers.
Taïga: a companion for life
Taïga is not just a dog: he is a trusted partner, a medical support, and a faithful companion. His integration at Piguet Galland reflects the inclusive and caring spirit within our institution. Together, José-Carlos and Taïga pave the way for better understanding of assistance dogs and their crucial role in the lives of people with special needs.
We wish José-Carlos and Taïga a wonderful journey filled with companionship and success!
